Recovering after ACL, meniscus, or knee replacement surgery is a gradual process. The right exercises and milestones depend on the operation, your surgeon’s instructions, and how your knee responds. A physiotherapist can help you progress without treating a general timeline as a rulebook.

Start with the basics

In the early stages, your care team may prioritize controlling swelling, regaining comfortable knee movement, and walking safely. Follow your surgeon’s weight-bearing and movement instructions, and use crutches or a brace as directed. Do not add exercises or increase activity just because a certain number of days has passed.

Pay attention to how your knee responds after activity. Mild soreness can be part of rehabilitation, but a noticeable increase in swelling, stiffness, or pain that persists into the next day may mean you did too much. Let your physiotherapist know so the plan can be adjusted.

Build movement and strength progressively

Rehabilitation often moves from gentle movement and muscle activation toward more demanding strength, balance, and functional tasks. Depending on your surgery and stage, a plan may include:

  • Practicing a comfortable, even walking pattern.
  • Working toward the movement goals set by your surgeon or physiotherapist.
  • Strengthening the thigh, hip, and calf muscles with appropriate exercises.
  • Progressing to balance, stairs, and other daily activities when ready.

Good form and a manageable response matter more than doing a large number of repetitions. Ask for a demonstration if an exercise is unclear, and check before changing resistance, range, or frequency.

Use milestones, not a calendar alone

Returning to work, running, or sport depends on more than feeling ready. Your physiotherapist may consider swelling, movement, strength, balance, confidence, and the demands of the activity. Running and cutting sports usually require a more demanding progression than ordinary walking. Testing and guidance can help identify what still needs work.

Contact your surgeon or medical team if you have concerns about your incision, a sudden worsening of symptoms, or a change that is outside the instructions you were given. Seek urgent medical advice for symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or sudden significant calf swelling.
