Your first physiotherapy appointment is a chance to explain what is bothering you, understand what may be affecting your movement, and discuss possible next steps. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or a perfect description of your symptoms. A clear account of what you have noticed is a helpful place to begin.
Before your appointment
Think about when the problem started, what tends to make it better or worse, and how it affects the activities you care about. Bring any relevant surgical instructions, imaging reports, or referral information you have. If you are attending for a motor vehicle or workplace injury, bring any claim details or paperwork that may help the clinic understand your situation.
Wear clothing that lets you move comfortably and makes it possible to assess the area involved. For example, shorts can be useful for a knee assessment. If you are unsure what to wear or bring, ask the clinic before your visit.
What happens during the assessment
Your physiotherapist will ask about your health history, symptoms, goals, and the tasks you want to return to. They may then assess relevant movement, strength, balance, or other functions. The details depend on your concern: an assessment for post-surgical rehab may differ from one for running pain, dizziness, or pelvic health.
At Momentum Physiotherapy, initial assessments are one hour and are never double-booked. The clinic has private treatment rooms and a 1,200-square-foot gym; which spaces and activities are useful depends on your needs. You can ask questions throughout the assessment, and you should tell your physiotherapist if a test or movement feels uncomfortable.
Agree on a plan that fits your goals
After the assessment, your physiotherapist can explain their findings in plain language and discuss options for care. A plan may include exercises, advice for modifying activities, hands-on treatment, or further assessment. You can talk about what feels realistic with your schedule and what progress would look like for you. The plan may change as you learn how your body responds.
If you have an ICBC or WorkSafeBC claim, Momentum Physiotherapy handles these claims with direct billing. Coverage and claim requirements can depend on your situation, so bring your claim information and confirm any questions about billing with the clinic.
Momentum Physiotherapy has evening and Saturday hours, online booking, and a free 15-minute phone consult. If you have questions before booking, get in touch with the clinic.
