Your first physiotherapy appointment is a chance to explain what is bothering you and work out practical next steps. You do not need to know the cause of your symptoms or arrive with a list of perfect answers. Your physiotherapist will guide the conversation and explain what they are assessing.
Before you arrive
Think about when the problem began, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects activities that matter to you. Bring relevant medical or surgery information, a medication list if useful, and any instructions from your physician or surgeon. For a sports or movement concern, comfortable clothing that lets you move can make the physical assessment easier.
If your visit relates to an ICBC or WorkSafeBC claim, bring the claim details and any paperwork you have. Momentum Physiotherapy handles ICBC and WorkSafeBC claims with direct billing; ask the clinic if you are unsure what information is needed for your situation.
What happens during the assessment
At Momentum Physiotherapy, the initial assessment is one hour and appointments are never double-booked. Your physiotherapist will ask about your health history, symptoms, daily activities, and goals. They may also ask what you have tried so far and what you are hoping to return to.
With your consent, the assessment may include observing how you move, checking strength or flexibility, and using other tests relevant to your concern. You can ask questions, request clarification, or let the physiotherapist know if something is uncomfortable. The assessment takes place in a private treatment room, with access to the clinic’s gym when appropriate.
Leave with a clear next step
Your physiotherapist will explain what they found in plain language and discuss options for care. A plan may include exercises, advice about pacing or activity, hands-on treatment, or a recommendation to consult another health professional. The right approach depends on your needs; you should understand what a proposed exercise is for and how to adjust it if symptoms change.
You can also discuss how often to attend and what progress might look like. Recovery is not always a straight line, so the plan may change as you learn how your body responds. The clinic has physiotherapists, a kinesiologist, and a registered massage therapist, and your physiotherapist can explain which services may be relevant to your goals.
Momentum Physiotherapy offers online booking, evening and Saturday hours, and a free 15-minute phone consult if you want to ask a question before scheduling. Contact the clinic if you would like help choosing a first appointment.
