Recovery after knee surgery is a gradual process, not a race to get back to your usual routine. The right pace depends on the procedure, your health, and your surgeon’s instructions. Rehab after an ACL repair, a knee replacement, and other knee procedures can look quite different, so use your surgical team’s plan as the starting point.

Start with your surgical instructions

Before adding exercises or increasing activity, make sure you understand any limits on weight-bearing, knee movement, and wound care. Your surgeon may also provide guidance about crutches, a brace, or when to begin physiotherapy. If instructions are unclear, check with your surgical team rather than guessing.

In the early days, follow your recommendations for rest, elevation, and icing if provided. Short, gentle walks or prescribed movements may be part of your plan, but do not push through sharp or escalating pain. Keep track of swelling and how your knee responds later in the day; that information can help guide your next steps.

Build movement and strength in stages

Rehab often progresses from managing swelling and restoring comfortable movement to improving strength, balance, and the ability to handle daily tasks. Later goals may include stairs, longer walks, work demands, or sport-specific movements. These stages overlap, and progress is not always perfectly steady.

A useful way to pace activity is to notice how your knee feels during exercise and over the following hours. If pain or swelling increases and stays elevated, consider reducing the next session and discuss the pattern with your physiotherapist. Regular, manageable practice is generally more useful than doing a large amount on a good day and needing several days to recover.

Do not use someone else’s recovery timeline as a benchmark. Your exercise selection and progression should reflect your operation and your current function. A physiotherapist can help you work toward clear goals while keeping your surgeon’s precautions in view.

Know when to ask for help

Contact your surgeon or care team if you have concerns about your incision, a sudden change in symptoms, or pain that is not responding as expected. Seek urgent medical care for symptoms such as chest pain or sudden shortness of breath. New or significant calf pain or swelling also deserves prompt medical advice, especially after surgery.
